GOD SAVE (the) QUEEN

To coincide with the major Freddie Mercury auction at Sotheby’s, the Iconic Images Gallery Piccadilly is casting a fine-art spotlight on one of the greatest frontmen of all time.
With his electric stage presence and spectacular four-octave vocal range, Freddie Mercury defied the conventions of the rock and roll frontman. Born Farrokh Bulsara to Parsi-Indian parents in Zanzibar in 1946, he studied music and songcraft through childhood before forming Queen with Brian May and Roger Taylor in 1970. Over the course of 14 albums, Queen released a staggering 53 Top 40 singles, six of which went to Number 1. The band received countless awards and were inducted in 2001 into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Mercury died of AIDS in 1991 at the age of 45. His death helped increase public awareness of the illness, and the Mercury Phoenix Trust, established in his name, has since raised millions of pounds for various AIDS-related charities.
From Terry O’Neill’s pitch-perfect press shots of Freddie and his bandmates in 1975, Janet Macoska’s record of his boldly flamboyant outfits, Kevin Cummins’ iconic leather-bound incarnation, to Denis O’Regan’s rock royalist presiding over Wembley in 1986, this exhibition celebrates the visual spectacle that was Freddie Mercury, bringing together images that immortalise a life that was cut too short, but lived to the full.
